This first
Chevrolet crossover, sold from 2004 on the Theta platform, soon found its place
in the market. After a year, the Pontiac
Torrent clone followed. The vehicles
were built in Canada, with the 3350cc V6 OHV engine imported from China, as in
North America this engine family was abandoned for the other cars. It was a second generation version of the
similar-sized engine in the 1993 Camaro/Firebird (in 2837cc form dating back to
what was in the fwd X-cars from 1979), but now with alloy heads, and related to
the 2986cc found in the first Chinese Buicks of 1999. By 2007, the US-built V6 3564cc DOHC all
alloy HF engine was added, and, imported from Japan, also fitted in the Ontario-built
Suzuki XL-7 sibling.
Direct
injection was added to this engine in the second generation Equinox and more
angular GMC Terrain sibling from mid-2009, next to the 4-cylinder 2384cc and V6
2994cc with similar characteristics. By
2012, US Equinox sales passed the 200,000 mark, with another 100,000 for the
Terrain. Another, Korean-built GMC
Terrain, a rebadged Opel Antara on the shorter Theta platform, preceded the
American model from late 2007 till 2010 in the Middle East, where the Pontiac
brand was abandoned earlier.
Chevrolet
Equinox China, North America: April 2017
The
downsized 3rd generation Equinox on the D2 platform was to be built in Mexico and
China, with the GM/SAIC 1.5-litre turbo as basic engine. Exports to USA/Canada and South America, the
Middle East, South Korea and, as Holden to Australia/New Zealand all came from
Mexico, itself denied the all-wheel-drive models. At this time, in the US, Equinox sales had
reached nearly 2 million since its launch and it had become Chevrolet’s
best-selling passenger vehicle.
Sales in
America now soon exceeded an annual 300,000, of which about 60% with
front-wheel-drive. In China, sales
dropped from 70,000 in 2018 to 50,000 in 2019, with about 75% now
front-wheel-drive. In 2019, 2,100 units
were sold in South Korea (diesels only), 2,400 in Mexico (front-wheel-drive
only), 4,600 in Brazil (2-litre models only) and 4,500 in Australia, where also
a manual gearbox was offered.
In July
2019, to meet National 6 emissions standards, the Equinox in China saw the LYX
1.5 turbo engine replaced by the LFV, reducing net power from 127 to 119 kW.
In
September 2020, the facelifted Equinox in China saw the LTG 2.0 turbo engine
replaced by the LSY with cylinder deactivation.
From April 2020 Chinese Equinox were exported to Uzbekistan. By 2021, a third of models sold in China were
equipped with the 2-litre engine, which was discontinued in North America for
2021. By October 2021, the LSY engine
changed into the mild hybrid LXH in China.
In the first half of 2022, almost a third of the models sold in China
had 4-wheel-drive, and nearly a quarter had the 1.5 engine. In 2022, more than 22,700 were sold in China, and 11,500 in 2023.
In
September 2022, the Equinox in North America saw the LYX 1.5 turbo engine
replaced by the LSD engine with a higher-pressure fuel system, increasing net
power from 127 to 130 kW.
In November
2022, a 500-units Exploration limited edition 2-litre
all-wheel-drive model was presented in China with wheel arch covers, black
front and rear lips, and red hooks, to be delivered from January 2023. In May 2023, RS features (blackened grille, redline
exterior mirror, black wheels) became optional on the 1.5-litre model.

Chevrolet Equinox (Plus) North America: tbe mid-2024, China: tbe second quarter
2024
To be
revealed at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2024, the next generation Equinox
with internal combustion engine, named here Equinox Plus, will have a more angular
exterior and is on the D2UC-2 platform, which borrows some technical elements
from the VSS-F platform to enhance overall performance. The wheelbase is 5 mm longer, the width
increases with 6 cm, and the track 5 cm at the front and 4 cm at the rear.
The 1.5
engine in China will be the dual fast cam phasers 4-cylinder 1498cc engine with
a net/gross output of 127/132 kW, while the mild hybrid 2-litre model
(front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive) will be retained. A plug-in hybrid model with a 140 kW electric
motor next to the 1.5-litre engine, will be available, weighing 1860 kg, versus
1550 kg for the single-motor model.
In the
United States, the 1490cc SGE engine will be retained, but now mated to a CVT
transmission for the front-wheel-drive, and an 8-speed automatic for the
all-wheel-drive model.
