What are 'six-seaters'?
1. So-called 'six-seaters' or 532 SUVs are Chinese medium to large new energy vehicles with a relatively straight belt- and roofline, a wheelbase of approximately 3 meters, a length of 5 meters or more and a width of 2 meters. The third row has only two seats, and there is an aisle between the second-row seats. There are also three-seat middle row editions with folding seatbacks, five-seaters with more legroom and without a third row and even four-seaters without a second row. The six-seat SUVs share a focus on luxury, prioritizing a plush, spacious experience, so the third row is more about providing ample space for adults when needed, rather than cramming in three smaller seats, as in the seven-seat MPVs. Note that five-seater SUVs can also have similar dimensions, such as the China-only AUDI E7X, also available with four seats. There are also '532' five-seater sedans.
SUVs and MPVs offer more interior and cargo space, making them popular for families with children or seniors, as the higher entry and exit points are more convenient. They are typically 'two-box' designs, like hatchbacks/wagons, where the passenger cabin and cargo area are integrated into a single, large compartment. Sedans have less cargo flexibility due to height limitations but often provide better sound insulation in the trunk area and have a more balanced appearance.
SUVs have higher ground clearance and a taller, more robust stance, designed to handle varied terrain and road conditions, including potholes and gravel. Sedans, hatchbacks/wagons and MPVs are lower to the ground, with a lower center of gravity that provides better stability, agility, and a more direct connection to the road for sharp handling. They prioritize efficiency and refinement for daily commutes, while SUVs are designed for 'multi-scenario' versatility, including weekend outings and handling uneven roads with ease.
An SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) emphasizes style and off-road capability with a rugged design, often featuring All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and powerful engines, while an MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) prioritizes maximum interior space, passenger comfort, and practicality with flexible seating (like sliding doors) for large families, making it ideal for city use and cargo, usually with lower ground clearance and front-wheel drive. The core difference is an SUV's blend of adventure-ready features and a bold look, versus an MPV's focus on functional, spacious family transport.
In China, the SUV has risen in popularity partly because it is perceived as a status symbol associated with a higher social standing. Since 2023 more SUVs were sold than 'cars': 10.3 million SUVs vs 10.2 million 'cars' and 1.1 million MPVs, while in 2022 there were 9.4 million SUVs sold, 10.2 million 'cars' and 943,000 MPVs.
Currently, due to the weight and high wind resistance of three-row SUVs, pure electric power is not very range-friendly. Therefore, range-extended electric vehicles have become the most suitable choice for this scenario, and large-battery range-extended vehicles are gradually becoming mainstream. The longer models are often available with rear-wheel steering, which significantly improves low-speed U-turns and maneuverability in urban environments. However, this feature also increases the curb weight by approximately 100 kg and shortens the acceleration time by a few tenths of a second. Incidentally, weight is rarely mentioned in manufacturer specifications for electric vehicles.
The 2018 NIO ES8 EV quickly established NIO as a leader among China's emerging electric vehicle manufacturers, though NIO acquired these JAC factories only in December 2023. It demonstrated the strength of Chinese independent brands in electric vehicle platforms, battery technology, and intelligent features. The AITO M7, a range extender from another startup, has quickly surpassed the NIO ES8 in sales since 2022, with over 400,000 units sold across two generations.
The startup Li Auto, established in 2019, launched the boxy Li L9 in September 2022, followed two months later by the similarly styled L8 and 5-seater L7 in March 2023, both on a 10 cm shorter wheelbase, all with the same front and rear track. A significantly smaller L6 arrived in April 2024, still in the same square and rugged style, with clean lines and no unnecessary rounded curves. Xiaomi, a well-known maker of smart consumer electronics in China, is highly likely to launch four brand-new extended-range SUVs in 2026 in the same way as Li Auto, starting with the Skynomad N90. This is a significant departure from Xiaomi's previous designs, like the YU7 SUV. The company has been offering cars since 2024.
With 150,000 units sold in 2025, the AITO M8 was the best-selling six-seater in a market segment of more than one million vehicles per year. The second generation M7 from September 2025 will soon surpass the M8. AITO (Wenjič) by the Seres Group is the main member of HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance), initiated and led by Chinese multinational technology company Huawei. Established in 2023, the other members of the 'Jič' alliance include Luxeed (Zhijič) by Chery, Stelato (Xiangjič) since October 2024 by BAIC BluePark, Maextro (Zunjič) since August 2025 by JAC Group (for both see below), and SAIC (Shangjič) since September 2025 by SAIC Motor (Shangqi) Passenger Vehicle Branch, which also includes Roewe and MG.
Zhijič (Luxeed) by Chery should not be confused with Zhiji (IM) by SAIC Motor/Alibaba Group/Zhangjiang Hi-Tech, nor with the sub-brand Zhijing (Electra) by Buick (SAIC-GM). Also, Xingtu (Exeed), Shen Xingzhe (Freelander) and Xingji (Star Motor) have names that look alike.
Thanks in particular to the intelligent Qiankun drive technology, the 'Jing' series includes Dongfeng's Yijing brand (English name: Epicland) and GAC's Qijing brand (English name: Aistaland, meaning 'AI Start New Land'), a less close collaboration established in the fall of 2025 between technology giant Huawei and these (partly) state-owned enterprises. SGMW's Huajing joined in April 2026.
The latest trend is increasing the electric range of hybrid six-seaters to more than 400 km, as with the Denza N8L and N9, IM (Zhiji) LS9, Leapmotor D19, and Volkswagen ID.ERA 9X. Another trend is slightly lengthening the wheelbase without fundamentally changing the appearance. This is what the main 'number 9' competitors, Li L9 and AITO M9, will do: extend the wheelbase by 20 and 15 mm respectively, to 3125 mm (equal to that of BYD's Denza N9), and fit wider tires. Of course there are boss above boss models, such as the SAIC's IM LS9, Geely's Zeekr 9X and NIO ES9 with wheelbases of 3160, 3169 and 3250 mm.
From September 2025 through March 2026, pure-electric large three-row SUVs outsold extended-range models for seven straight months. With their '2-2-2' layout, six-seat SUVs perfectly matched the travel needs of multi-child families, while offering higher price points and profit margins than five-seaters.
Two recent slightly undersized five/six-seaters are also listed: the June 2024 Leapmotor C16 and the July 2026 Wuling XingGuang L. Not listed is an older six-seater (November 2023), the Exeed Lanyue by Chery, started as gasoline seven-seater SUV in March 2021 and became four years later available as 4wd PHEV with a length of 5010 mm, a width of 1940 mm on a 2900 mm wheelbase.
Besides, BYD's Fangchengbao Bao 8 body-on-frame six/seven-seater, introduced in November 2024, is not listed.
New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sales in China saw temporary domestic dips and slower growth early in 2026 due to expired tax exemptions, reduced regional subsidies, and consumer hesitation ahead of major auto shows. Additionally, a massive pre-buy surge in late 2025 shifted early 2026 sales, resulting in overall domestic market adjustments.
'five-seaters'
Currently, the demand for family cars in China is undergoing a qualitative upgrade. Large space, high intelligence, and long range have become the core benchmarks in the high-end SUV market. Users with strong five-seater needs, such as those with two children or a pet, are no longer satisfied with mediocre product experiences, showing a strong demand for higher quality, driving the market towards deeper advancements in quality and personalization, towards a 'courtyard-level large five-seater SUV'.
Dongfeng's Voyah Taishan X8 pioneered the '622' courtyard-level standard for large five-seater SUVs: interior space must be at least 6 square meters, capable of accommodating a 2-meter flat bed, and two of the rear seats must be zero-gravity seats: ergonomic automotive seats designed using NASA research to mimic the 'neutral body posture' of weightlessness, reducing fatigue and improving circulation on long drives by providing continuous spinal support. It supports one-button switching between presidential three-seater, luxury four-seater, and spacious five-seater modes. On March 19, 2026, Voyah Automobile officially listed on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, becoming the 'first state-owned enterprise to list in the high-end new energy vehicle sector.'
