NS double-deckers

DD-IRM, VIRM

The DD-IRM (DubbelDeks-InterRegio Materieel) has been in service since 1994 as three- and four-car train sets which are nicknamed Bizon, given their appearance. They really wanted a train set without a motor car. The traction installation is located in the space next to the stairs to the top. This "traction" space is accessible from outside via a hinged hatch. Because the transport capacity of the three-car trains in particular was soon no longer sufficient, a conversion program was launched in 2000 to create VIRM (V = verlengd – extended).

All three-car trains were extended to four-car trains with an additional middle car, which was prepared for installation of a transformer for operation under an overhead line voltage of 25 kV (HSL line), but later it was concluded that the ground was too soft for the double-deckers. The previous four-car trains were extended to six-car trains with two middle cars (the second one powered). The existing four-car trains length grew with a meter, due to the new middle car.

DD-AR, DDZ

The DubbelDeks AggloRegiomaterieel (DD-AR) was built between 1991 and 1996 by the Talbot company in Aachen. The DD-AR carriages were based on the previous DDM-1 car series, put into service in 1985, which was the first series of double-decker trains of the NS, as a push-pull train in combination with a locomotive type 1600, later 1800. In fact, they wanted to have double-decker train sets built right away, but the development of motor cars would take too long. Due to a shortage of equipment, partly as a result of the OV student card in 1991, NS was forced to order at short notice. To this end, all trains were temporarily equipped with an electric locomotive series 1700, a modified version of the 1600.

After the delivery of the mDDM type motor carriages in 1996, the locomotives that were released could replace the old electric locomotives of the series 1100, 1200 and 1300 in freight transport. This replacement actually took place in 1998-1999. Only 50 motor cars were built, which were only used in combination with three cars. The four-car trains continued to run with a 1700.

In 2009 NedTrain started to modernise the DD-AR rolling stock under the new DDZ (DubbelDekkerZonering) code. The first came into service in 2012. 30 four-car and 20 six-car train sets were formed without using locomotives.
