CARDINALIDAE
This
American family covers dickcissel, cardinals, grosbeaks, tanagers, buntings,
seedeaters, chats.
Howard & Moore inserted this family out of subfamiliy Cardinalinae within
Emberizidae in 2003, the American Ornithologists’ Union did so in 1998.
The
Dickcissel, Spiza americana since 1824, initially Emberiza
americana. Emberiza = bunting; Spiza = finch. AOU moved the
Cardinalinae out of Fringillidae (finches) only by 1983. So it started as a
bunting in the 18th century, then became a finch in the 19th
century, in the bunting family again in the 20th century, and now in
the cardinal family.
Recently
there has been some shiftings to Cardinalidae
done by H&M in 2013 (AOU 2008).
Thraupidae
> Cardinalidae
Piranga tanagers
Habia ant
tanagers
Chlorothraupis tanagers
Emberizidae
(before 2003 in Emberizinae) > Cardinalidae
Amaurospiza seedeaters
Parulidae
> Cardinalidae
Granatellus chats
And
vice versa:
Cardinalidae > Thraupidae
Parkerthraustes grosbeak
Saltator saltators
and grosbeaks
Emberizidae
(before 2003 in Cardinalinae) > Thraupidae
Paroaria cardinals
(AOU 2012)
Gubernatrix cardinal (SACC
2012)
There
are now more cardinals in Thraupidae than in Cardinalidae, but Thraupidae
anyway is a much larger group. 22 out of 48 Cardinalidae species were added in
the current century (IOC counts 27 out of 53). But 19 species went from
Cardinalidae to Thraupidae.
